One of the ways to build your online presence is to create compelling content. Creating such content is something that has become more and more simple with the advent of web 2.0. Creating regular blog posts which curate content on the internet is certainly one way to do this. However more and more companies are looking to take this a step further.
For instance is there a topic you can create a valuable white paper about that you could share on the internet? Can you think of an interesting question that you or your client would like to know the answer to? Researching such questions on the internet is affordable these days. Could you invest in a survey and share the results with your customers? This can be an excellent way to create traffic to your site.
I have been exploring the use of video and audio podcasts over the last few days. I enjoyed watching the gilmour gang. This is a series of rather rambling interviews about technology that take place between five or six remote interviewee’s. What was compelling about the interviews is that they were giving very personal views of technology. These very unedited sessions really feel “up, close and personal”. If your business is about B2B then becoming the host for a series of online debates could certainly build your reputation and presence. Interestingly the audiences for these debates don’t necessarily need video – in fact if you provide video you should seriously consider posting a simple audio stream as well because many people like to listen to these types of debates when in an eyes free situation like driving!
Of course viral video has been used for promotional use on the internet. However video animation can be used to create explanations about your business. ReadWriteBusiness pointed me to “Common Craft” a company that use animations to create simple explanations – here is their plain english explanation on twitter search. This inspired this startup to create a similar animation explaining how their business works. Could you do something similar?
Sharing slides is another popular way to share information. However if you are doing this it really is worth adding the talk notes for each page or writing the slide show in such away that it doesn’t need notes (the text is on the slides). In other words think about your virtual audience. They have very different needs to the audience when you are present.
Infographics, mashups and widgets add a whole new class of content that can be very compelling. The key when thinking about your online offering is really considering your audience. What do they need? What would make you stand out from your competitors? Then think about ways to provide that online. The point is to consider your context, have a go, and measure the results. Find out what works for you.
